Two men, aged 27 years old and 19 years old, appeared in court on Monday after having been arrested for allegedly attacking a footballer in the car park of a football ground after a fifth-tier match in the Paphos district.
The incident occurred after Poseidonas Yiolou thrashed Anarita 6-0 in the Paphos agricultural league, Cyprus’ fifth tier for clubs in the Paphos district, at the Yiolou Community Stadium on Saturday.
According to the police, a 26-year-old footballer reported that after the end of the game, as he was in the car park attempting to leave the ground, he was first attacked by the 19-year-old, who punched him, while the 27-year-old “obstructed another man who ran to help”.
The footballer was taken to the Paphos general hospital’s accident and emergency unit, where doctors found that he had suffered abrasions and bruises to his head.
The two men were arrested and then remanded in custody for two days on Monday.
