Cyprus’ technology sector is seeking closer cooperation with the Office of the Commissioner of Electronic Communications on cybersecurity and artificial intelligence, following discussions on joint initiatives, specialised training and stronger links between public authorities and technology businesses.
A delegation of the Cyprus Information Technology Enterprises Association (CITEA) held a meeting with Electronic Communications Commissioner Marios Pieris, in the presence of Assistant Commissioner Georgios Georgiou, with the aim of strengthening cooperation and promoting joint initiatives in both fields.
Representing CITEA were the association’s president George Malekkos, vice-president Antonia Michael, board member Nikos Kaisis and director Matina Zisiadou.
During the meeting, the participants discussed opportunities for developing meaningful cooperation between CITEA and the Office of the Commissioner of Electronic Communications, with a particular focus on cybersecurity, artificial intelligence and strengthening the links between the relevant institutional bodies and technology businesses in Cyprus.
In this context, reference was also made to CITEA’s proposals regarding the European Cybersecurity Act, as part of the association’s contribution to the European dialogue and its efforts to highlight the views, needs and challenges faced by businesses in the sector.
The participants also explored opportunities to organise specialised training activities for CITEA members, with the aim of raising awareness and strengthening their capabilities in cybersecurity, artificial intelligence and related regulatory developments.
Beyond training, the meeting addressed the development of joint initiatives bringing together the relevant authorities, experts and technology businesses.
These initiatives could provide a stable framework for exchanging knowledge and views, identifying usual challenges and developing proposals to address issues affecting the digital sector.
Commenting on the discussions, Malekkos stressed the importance of cooperation, stating, “In today’s digital age, the role of the Commissioner of Electronic Communications and the Authority is more critical than ever. The challenges posed by cybersecurity and artificial intelligence require meaningful cooperation and immediate, practical action.”
Referring to the outcome of the meeting, he added, “What particularly impressed me about today’s meeting was the new Commissioner’s pragmatic approach and positive response to our proposals. We discussed specific ideas, exchanged views, and established that there is a genuine willingness to move forward together.”
Malekkos also expressed the association’s readiness to work more closely with the Commissioner and his Office, saying, “As CITEA, we are ready to collaborate closely with the Commissioner and his Office through joint workshops, training activities, knowledge-sharing and initiatives that will have a tangible impact on businesses and the Cypriot economy.”
He went on to thank Pieris for the discussions, adding, “I would like to personally thank the Commissioner, Pieris, for an exceptionally constructive meeting, his open approach, and his pragmatism. We have a very productive partnership ahead of us, with meaningful results.”
More broadly, strengthening cooperation between the public and private sectors is a key factor in effectively addressing the challenges of the digital age, enhancing digital security and ensuring the responsible use of new technologies.
For its part, CITEA continues to pursue meaningful partnerships with institutional stakeholders and competent authorities, actively contributing to the dialogue on cybersecurity, artificial intelligence and the digital transformation of Cyprus.
