This video takes a closer look at ‘Paris Street; Rainy Day’, painted in 1877 by one of the leading figures of the French Impressionist movement, Gustave Caillebotte.

Considered the artist’s masterpiece, the complex intersection represents on a small scale the changing urban landscape of late nineteenth-century Paris. Through this work, Caillebotte strikingly captured a vast, stark modernity, complete with life-size figures strolling in the foreground and wearing the latest fashions.

The painting hangs in the Art Institute of Chicago’s ‘Painting and Sculpture of Europe’ gallery. More details about the work can be found here.
