Book presentation looks at history of the island through its copper trade

Cyprus is home to some of the world’s richest copper ore reserves, say the organisers of an upcoming book presentation. ”Since at least the second millennium BC, they have been intensively used. Copper production and trade, as well as the wealth generated by it, have long been the backbone of the island’s economy, as evidenced by the fact that the Troodos copper mines were reopened in the 20th century, after a 1,000-year hiatus.”

But is copper only a mere timestamp in the history of the island, or is it a much more important element that solidifies the identity of Cyprus?” they question. A book presentation will shed light on how Cypriot copper has changed and can change our lives, and how it has made a significant impact to the historical, sociological, environmental and cultural agenda of the world.

‘Aes Cyprium; Some Time, Today, Tomorrow and Always’ is the book by DK Constantinides and is the latest event in a project by Phaneromenis70 titled Delivering Views. This is #28 and it will be officially presented at an event on Wednesday at 5pm.

The project is based on exchanges of images and texts focused on Nicosia and Cyprus. In recent years, Phaneromenis70 has been collecting such items sent to them by tourists who visited Cyprus, to achieve a new approach and interpretation of their hometown through the foreigner’s point of view. The archive material compiled is periodically delivered to editors, intellectuals or artists so that they comment by choice on anything that moves them. This latest edition focuses on copper and its relationship with the island and its locals.
