There is a strong need to create a singular housing policy body, which will be responsible for monitoring and implementing housing plans, presidential candidate Andreas Mavroyiannis said on Wednesday.

The Akel-backed candidate met with the board of the Cyprus Land Development Corporation to discuss the current housing policy and its potential to be more effective.

Mavroyiannis stressed he would undertake every possible effort to provide social housing to those in need “both through a system of accessible, quality homes or through affordable rents where property purchase isn’t possible.”

He added he will put a lot of emphasis in increasing the available number of housing units to meet demand across the entire social and economic spectrum, with a goal that everyone can have a respectable home.

There will also be support for vulnerable groups and young couples, as well as efforts to revive rural areas, Mavroyiannis said.
