A man appeared in court in the north on Wednesday after attempting to smuggle two people to the Republic.

He had been arrested on Tuesday while driving between Nicosia and Famagusta with two passengers in his car, one a national of Nigeria, and the other a national of Pakistan.

Police learned that the man had offered to smuggle the pair to the Republic in exchange for €120 per person.

As a result, he was arrested on suspicion of human trafficking, while his passengers were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit a crime. He was remanded in custody for two days on Wednesday.

Police say they are continuing their investigation and that they believe the man may have accomplices.
