Feel like part of the family at cosy German venue

After being on the rotation of clean, cook, eat, repeat over the holiday period, we could take no more gave ourselves a rest and went out for a well-deserved treat. Some funny and entertaining reels I’d seen on social media came to mind; before I had even got there I liked the vibe of the owners.

Lisa’s Flammhaus is in the heart of Larnaca’s shopping area along Zinonos Kiteos. This quaint café and restaurant brings a slice of European charm to the bustling streets, offering an array of Flammkuchen – a delicious German flatbread. Lisa and Andreas had lived in Germany for 30 years and decided to make the move back to Cyprus, bringing with them the famous Flammkuchen.

From the moment you step into Lisa’s Flammhaus, you’re greeted by a cosy, family-run atmosphere that exudes warmth and friendliness. The interior is tastefully decorated, combining rustic elements with modern touches to create a welcoming space. Soft lighting, comfortable seating and charming décor elements such as wooden tables and framed art contribute to the relaxed ambiance. The inviting atmosphere makes you feel right at home. However, seating is limited so it turned out that us calling ahead had been a good idea. Another thing you’ll notice as you walk in is the counter filled with tempting desserts and pastries. Without a doubt, I’d be over to check that out properly later.

While the menu has an array of items such as baguettes, pretzels and croissants, the star of the show is undoubtedly the Flammkuchen. This thin, crispy flatbread is expertly crafted and available with a variety of toppings, ensuring there’s something for everyone. From the traditional Alsation style to apple-honey and tips to Cypriot cuisine that included pastourmas, halloumi and lountza, there is also a creative vegan option. As the setting is quite intimate, you get to see Lisa preparing the food in her spotless work area.

Trying something new, my brain told me to go for the traditional Alsation style but I was too tempted by the Pastourmas Flammkuchen and of course, I added halloumi. Each one comes with the option of a cream or tomato sauce for the base. I’ve had tomato base a million times so I went with cream, I wasn’t sure how well it would match with the spicy sausage but, why not? When the Flammkuchen arrived, the creamy base was not what I expected. From the description on the menu I had expected a white sauce however, it turned out to be a layer of cream cheese. It was still nice but after trying my partner’s food that had been ordered with the tomato base, I would have preferred that. But regardless of sauce, the crispy crust provides a satisfying crunch.

The time had come for me to make the short walk over to the counter to decide on dessert. The good thing about the Flammkuchen is that it is light so you’ll still have room. It all looked so good I had trouble deciding. There was a range of homemade vegan delights highly recommended by Andreas, but despite the recommendation, I had already spotted the orange pie. It’s something I enjoy but don’t have often so my mind was made up. It was most definitely a generous slice! The amount of syrup made it a little rich but if that’s your thing, you’ll love it! Alternatively, share it and you’ll feel like it’s just right. My partner went with Andreas’ recommendation and it was indeed very tasty.

The exceptional service at Lisa’s Flammhaus is one of the reasons I would return. Andreas and Lisa were attentive and friendly, ensuring a pleasant dining experience. Their genuine passion for the restaurant shines through in every interaction, making guests feel like part of the family. The warm hospitality adds a personal touch that enhances the overall experience.
