The Avakas Gorge trail in the Akamas National forest park will remain closed until further notice due to the adverse weather conditions, the forestry department said on Monday.
“Due to weather conditions, increased water flow, slippery ground and the risk of falling rocks and debris, the Avakas Gorge remains closed until further notice,” the department said.
The path was first closed in December 2025, with this remaining in place until it is completely safe for visitors. Signs have been placed at the entrance to the gorge.
The department apologised for any inconvenience caused to the public, underlining that the closure was deemed necessary for public safety.
Last week, a total of 31 hikers had to be rescued from the gorge after being trapped by rising water.
The first group, of 26 hikers, had called for help at 1pm and was later hoisted to safety with ropes and life jackets.
The rescue operation was followed by another call regarding five people trapped in the same gorge at around 4pm.
Rescuers pulled three people out of the rising water, before bringing out the other two safely from a different part of the gorge.
