Search and rescue crews scoured the Phinikoudes area in Larnaca on Sunday after a 70-year-old woman who went swimming at around 1 pm did not come out of the water.

Authorities were alerted at around 3.40 pm of the woman’s disappearance and sent to the area police boats and helicopters to search for her.

The woman had gone with a friend to the east of the Phinikoudes beach, and she reportedly went into the water for a swim at around 1 pm but has been missing since. The search and rescue operation is coordinated by the Larnaca joint rescue coordination centre (JRCC).

The search will resume on Monday morning.
