Cabinet approves plan to boost rural tourism

The council of ministers on Wednesday approved a plan by the deputy ministry of tourism aimed at boosting rural and mountain tourism.

According to an announcement released by the deputy ministry of tourism, the plan’s ultimate goal is to create a better product for visitors and increase the number of local and foreign tourists in areas not usually associated with Cyprus, which is normally sun and sea.

Communities can submit their requests for upgrades that will be subsidised by the government until March 31.

“Upgrades will be targeted at renewing old buildings and promoting local arts, tradition and activities,” the announcement said.

The announcement used as examples the creation of workshops specialising in traditional handicrafts, as well as practical classes on art and sculpture.

“The potential upgrades for our communities will help attract more visitors, who will be able to enjoy and experience our country’s traditional heritage,” the announcement said.

Improved road signs helping visitors find places of interests in villages and works of art highlighting the local heritage will also be placed around the island, the ministry added.
