Hey kids, in this video we explore the importance of developing what’s referred to as a ‘growth mindset’ instead of a ‘fixed mindset’.
Much of the work regarding growth mindset springs from the research of Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck, who investigated the power of students’ beliefs, both conscious and unconscious, tracking how changing even the simplest of them can impact nearly every aspect of their later life.
Dweck and her colleagues noticed that some students rebounded, while other students seemed devastated by even the smallest setbacks. This led her to coin the terms ‘fixed mindset’ and ‘growth mindset’ to describe the underlying beliefs people have about learning and intelligence.
When young people believe that they can get smarter, they understand that effort makes them stronger. So, they put in extra time and effort – not just in their studies, but towards any meaningful personal goal. Ultimately, this leads to personal progress and – given employers’ preference for a growth mindset – professional opportunity, as teens leave school and enter the workforce.
