Public, organisations rush to help fire victims (Updated)

A bank account was set up on Monday on the instructions of President Nicos Anastasiades for donations to support the people affected by the fires over the weekend in the Larnaca and Limassol districts.

Responding to the numerous calls by people expressing interest in assisting, the president gave instructions for the opening of a bank account where people can donate in support of those affected by the fires.

The president expressed his gratitude “for the great response and support by the people, who strengthen the declared will of the state to take actively support those afflicted.”

As the full extent of the devastation emerged individuals and organisations offered to donate and assist in any way they can.

Prominent businessman Andreas Papaellinas said on Monday he would donate €500,000 to support the people affected by the fires.

The University of Nicosia also offered a donation of €10,000.

Cypriot oil company Petrolina announced on Sunday that it would offer the fuel used by the firefighting aircraft free of charge.

On Monday, real estate developer Cyfield announced it will be contributing 10,000 pine trees to the forestry department’s reforestation efforts.

In addition, churches in the Limassol bishopric will be collecting donations for the next two Sundays, while Paphos municipality will be collecting donations during a concert at Kennedy square on Tuesday night.

The Pancyprian Volunteerism Coordinative Council is also accepting donations that will go to those affected in collaboration with the relevant authorities.
