A 26-year-old man is in custody after attempting to travel out of Cyprus using forged documents, Paphos police said on Wednesday.

According to the police report, the suspect was intercepted at Paphos airport the previous day while attempting to board a flight to Germany using a French ID card.

At passport control it was determined that the document had been forged, and while being questioned in his native French, the man admitted that those were not his real details.

Further investigations confirmed that the man was an asylum seeker whose application, filed in March 2020, is still pending.

He was arrested for forgery and placed in custody by Paphos CID.
