A fire that broke out on Tuesday afternoon near the Psathi community in Paphos was brought under control by firefighters after 8.20pm this evening, and authorities assured there is no longer a danger to nearby houses.

According to a post on Twitter by fire service spokesman Andreas Kettis, the fire has been brought under full control, however, firefighters will remain on alert in the area for any final extinguishments overnight.

Two hectares of dry grass and wild vegetation were burnt by the fire. The causes of it will be examined at a later stage.

The fire broke out at 4.40pm and outbreaks in inaccessible areas were being combated with air and ground forces.

Three fire engines from Paphos district fire stations were immediately dispatched, along with two vehicles from the forestry department, four aircraft – two planes and two helicopters – and an earth mover.

Kettis said the fire broke out near a stream which meant that firefighting crews were able to protect nearby homes.

Meanwhile, a fire that broke out at the Vati landfill near Limassol was also brought under control, Kettis reported in a Twitter update.

“Firefighting forces will remain for final extinguishments and the Fire Service and Forestry Department will be on alert throughout the night,” Kettis said.

The fire broke out at the landfill before spreading outside of the area. Three fire engines from the Limassol district responded to the blaze. Additionally, two firefighting aircraft from Akrotiri also responded.

The fire at Vati burnt a total area of one and a half hectares of dry grasses and wild vegetation.
