A traditional day in the heart of the old city of Limassol is arriving soon as Limassol AGORA prepares for its next traditional fair, or Panayiri. A fairly new monthly event on the first Saturday of each month, the fair offers both entertainment and a taste of Cyprus culture and tradition. Its next rendezvous is on September 3.

From 10am to 6pm a bazaar will be set up in the AGORA with traditional products and delicacies as well as some artists’ stalls. Think weaved baskets, organic beauty products, lavender-based ointments and sprays as well as herbal teas, essential oils and treats such as loukoumades, koupes and trahana.

A pop-up Cypriot coffee shop will also operate during the day. Continuing the spotlight on tradition, demonstrations on how palouze and shoushouko are made will take place from 10.30am to 12.30pm at then again from 2pm to 4pm. Throughout the demonstration, visitors will be able to observe the creation process and then taste the treats.

Also happening in the morning is a shadow theatre performance for children and adults at 10.30am which will be repeated at 4.30pm. More entertainment will follow as a backgammon competition invites visitors to show off their skills and win cash prizes. The competition will start at midday at the popup coffee shop where complimentary coffee will be served as of 10am. The two finalists will have a chance to win €150 and €50 while all the contestants will receive gifts courtesy of Laiko Coffee who is the competition’s sponsor.

More games that highlight traditional culture will be on throughout the day. Local board game Ate Olan, is an entertaining game based on phrases and words of the Cypriot dialect and the fair invites visitors to explore it and take part in the competition that will last from 11am to 5pm.

Live music will also be part of the day as a musical trio of Cypriot musicians will perform local songs between midday and 4pm. “Mark the date,” say organisers, for an event that honours and celebrates all things Cyprus!
