Teen admitted to hospital with measles (updated)

A teen has contracted measles and is in hospital at Limassol general, it emerged on Tuesday, hours after two toddlers with the disease were released after completing treatment.

According to a report in daily Politis, the teenage girl has been placed in quarantine with a fever.

Doctors however do not consider her condition life threatening.

The 15-year-old girl is now the sixth case of measles this year, with the other five being children under the age of two.

Earlier, two toddlers with measles were released from Makarios Hospital, hospital chief Avraam Ilias said.

The toddlers, 17-months and 22-months old, were both unvaccinated for the disease, the doctor had said.

Ilias said a seven-month-old baby that had also been brought in with measles remains in the hospital for further treatment.

Ilias said that they are concerned about a potential spread of measles as there is a large chunk of the population that are unvaccinated against the disease.

Measles vaccinations he said, are at 80 per cent, adding that the guideline for herd immunity to measles is 95 per cent.

He added that there is a concern in Europe also over the rise of measles, and that the health ministry is working to monitor the situation.
