First Lady Philippa Karsera-Christodoulides inaugurated XeniArtSpace, a new art gallery, on December 10, 2024, enriching the cultural scene not only of Limassol, but of Cyprus at large.
XeniArtSpace, located at the west tower of the Trilogy in Limassol is a museum-level gallery showcasing artists of global magnitude and importance from the 20th century until today, some of whose works are being hosted in Cyprus for the very first time.
Founded by long-time collector Xenia Kulbachevskaya, the space is a specially-designed gallery featuring art pieces by acclaimed world artists, such as Marc Chagall, Kees van Dongen, Ólafur Elísson, Studio Drift, Tadashi Kawamata, Chun Kwang Young, and many others from the international, as well as Cypriot, scene.
In her address, First Lady Karsera-Christodoulides applauded the new gallery’s emergence, underlining that its opening is the result of the founder’s passion for the arts and her wish to enrich the cultural scene of Cyprus, now her new homeland. The First Lady was pleased to note that XeniArtSpace will be free to the public to visit and enjoy viewing works not easily found in Cyprus, or featured in our country for the first time. “This is indeed an excellent opportunity for all citizens, and particularly the younger generations, to expand their horizons and enjoy a high-level cultural experience,” she noted.
In her own greeting, founder Kulbachevskaya stressed that galleries are not only places to visit and to buy art, but also spaces where each painting or art piece can be transportative. “I hope that tonight you will open your hearts and souls to experience this space,” she said. Kulbachevskaya also noted that the gallery team’s aim was to promote positivity and aesthetics, while encouraging creative development. “May this gallery serve as a place where collectors, artists and art enthusiasts find joy and inspiration,” she added.
XeniArtSpace Gallery is a space dedicated to exploring the evolution of art through the lens of the interaction of various forms and ideas. The gallery’s permanent collection, spanning artworks from the 20th and 21st centuries, is curated based on the founder’s personal taste, making it especially unique. The focus is not only on global recognition of the artists, but on the creation of a living, dynamic collection, where artworks resonate with each other, creating a narrative about both the collector’s personal style and the development of art as a whole.
All the works share a common theme of the spiral progression of art and the dialogue between artists addressing similar themes and forms of expression. The palette of the collection is largely inspired by the nature of Cyprus, with predominant tones of blue, green and sandy hues, capturing the island’s essence.
XeniArtSpace also highlights two essential themes: the role of women in art and the presence of Cypriot artists in the international dialogue. The gallery seeks to connect the island with the global art world. By showcasing Cypriot artists in dialogue with international movements, XeniArtSpace aims to foster cultural exchange and demonstrate the richness of Cypriot contributions to the broader artistic landscape.
Displayed in the upstairs temporary collection, are the works of another distinguished artist and photographer, Vadim Levin, who has moved to Cyprus. Captured under the title “Abstract Iceland”, are his images of the stunning scenery of Iceland, whose unique colours and unparalleled beauty are truly captivating. The said exhibition explores the intersection of photography and abstract expressionism.
