Two companies based in Cyprus were included on the latest list of entities sanctioned by the United States for aiding Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine.

The list was published on Friday by the US State Department and includes almost 80 individuals and entities, while the country’s treasury department designated more than 150 individuals and entities as “blocked property”.

One of the two companies is KRU Overseas Limited, which is described as a “Cyprus-based subsidiary of Kuzbassrazrezugol”.

Kuzbassrazrezugol, according to the state department is a “vertically integrated Russia-based coal entity and is considered one of the leaders in Russian coal mining”.

The state department said it had targeted Kuzbassrazrezugol and its subsidiaries as part of its efforts to “designate entities involved in Russia’s metals and mining industry to further constrain Russia’s revenue generation capacity”.

KRU Overseas Limited had previously supplied coal to the cement works at Vasiliko, with the first supply contract signed in 2019 and the first shipment arriving in July 2020.

The second Cyprus-based company listed was Lagosmarine Limited, which the US treasury department described as “the technical manager of a crude oil tanker that has made multiple port calls in a Russian port where oil has consistently traded well above the $60 (€59) price cap”.

The company is part of what is often called the “shadow fleet” – a number of vessels which, according to the US treasury department, “participate in high-risk shipping practices to facilitate illicit or sanctionable activity”.

US ambassador in Nicosia Julie Davis Fisher said the sanctions are evidence that the US and Cyprus “continue to work together to support Ukraine”.
