That’s right, film fans, the Larnaka Cinema Society organises free cinema evenings every Monday night and the series will continue into the spring months as well. Two more cinema nights are coming up in January and four in February, featuring films from Europe and the world.
Monday 20’s film is a Norwegian drama released in 2024. Elskling (Loveable) tells the story of Maria, a mother of four in her second marriage whose world comes crashing down when her husband asks for divorce. Though it is not an uncommon situation in life, the story develops in unexpected ways and is praised for its storytelling which won it eight awards.
The film will be screened at the Larnaca Municipal Theatre at 8.30pm, as all of the film nights, in its original language and with subtitles in Greek.
The following screening on Monday 27 is the documentary Intercepted which shows the destruction in the Ukraine war and its effect on survivors, without the blood-filled details. It carefully recalls soldiers’ phone calls home that reveal parallel worlds.
February’s screenings will begin with Kneecap, a film with sex, drugs and Irish rap. Catch it on February 3. Then, on February 10, the documentary Dahomey will be screened, featuring the 26 royal treasures from Dahomey, which were exhibited in Paris, and are returned to Benin. Two more films make up February’s agenda and a dozen others are coming up in the spring to please world cinema lovers.
