Limassol’s old port has become a centre of attraction for fans attending this summer’s FIBA EuroBasket, which is, in part, being hosted in the city.

The old port is serving as a fan zone, with Fiba saying it “offers daily action, entertainment, and unique experiences, creating a festive atmosphere which leads directly to the arena”.

FIBA also highlighted the 3v3 basketball tournament being hosted at the fan zone, saying it plays a “central role in the programme”, with different age groups and categories taking part on different evenings, and “the audience enjoying high-energy basketball in an open and accessible space”.

The fan zone is said to offer “interactive entertainment for the audience” as well as “EuroBasket souvenirs and tickets for the games”.

Young and old will have the opportunity to participate in activities which combine sports and games, while all visitors will have the opportunity to get closer to basketball and the spirit of the event,” it said.

These sports and games include an e-gaming area and a merchandise booth.

The fan zone will be open from 6.30pm until midnight on matchdays and from 6.30pm until 9.30pm on non-matchdays, and as well as the local entertainment, live streams of selected EuroBasket games will be shown on a big screen at the old port.

“The goal of the fan zone is clear: to bring the people closer to basketball, to highlight Limassol as a host city, and to create the bridge which will lead fans from the Old Port to the Spyros Kyprianou arena, where the action culminates,” Fiba said.

Limassol’s opening game will see Georgia face off against Spain, with that game set to tip off at 3pm on Thursday, before the hosts Cyprus, playing in their first ever EuroBasket game, will face Bosnia and Herzegovina at 6.15pm.

The third and final game of the night will see Greece play Italy at 9.30pm.

In total, 15 games will be played over five matchdays in Limassol between Thursday and the final night of action on September 4, before the knockout stage games will be played in Riga between September 6 and the final on September 14.
