Man arrested for child pornography (Updated)

By Constantinos Psillides

A 36-year-old man has been arrested in connection with possession of child pornography and exposing a minor to child pornography.

According to CyBC, the 36-year-old is a former police officer who was fired following his involvement in a similar incident in the past.

The 36-year-old reportedly approached a 16-year old boy in 2013, through a fake profile on Facebook.

Using the fake profile – that of a 16-year old girl – the man engaged the teenage boy in conversation and coaxed him into performing sexual acts on his webcam. The man recorded the video, which angered the boy and he ‘unfriended’ the person he thought was a teenage girl.

According to the CyBC report, a year later the man 36-year old approached the boy again – using another fake profile, this time of a man – and tried to blackmail the boy into having sex with him by threatening him to publicise the video. The 36-year old revealed to the boy that he was the one actually behind the fake teenage girl profile.

The boy contacted the authorities.

The man was arrested in his house in Nicosia on Wednesday and his personal computer was seized by police. A preliminary examination revealed videos and photographs of underage boys stored in the computer.

Reports said the 36-year old had a number of fake Facebook profiles.

The man could be facing a long jail sentence if found guilty. In June the House of Representatives passed child abuse legislation that calls for far stricter sentences in cases regarding the abuse of minors.

Under the new legislation, exposing a minor up to the age of 17, to pornographic material or coercing them to take part in what could be considered as predatory behaviour is punishable by up to 20 years of imprisonment. Any person found with pornographic material featuring children in their possession will also face up to 20 years in jail.
