A minute with

Eleni Skarpari
Stage name: Echo Wants Her Voice Back, Singer/Songwriter/Actress

Where do you live?
I live in South East London. At the moment, I share a flat with a brilliant, talented actress called Siubhan.

Best childhood memory?
Dancing on a wooden bench to the beat of the live drums in Nairobi, where I grew up, and feeling wildly alive.

Most frequented restaurant and absolute favourite dish? What food would you really turn your nose up at?
I don’t really have a most frequented restaurant. I like to try new places. In London, this can be an adventure. My absolute favourite dish is sashimi. Raw fish is just great. I’m not a big fan of beans.

What did you have for breakfast?
Granola and yogurt, a hardboiled egg, and spicy-cinnamon flavoured coffee. I have strange cravings.

Would you class yourself as a day or night person? What’s your idea of the perfect night/day out?
A night person. It takes me a few hours to get into my day.
A perfect day out is having a picnic in a lush, green park, with good company and a bottle of prosecco.
A perfect night out is staying in, lighting candles, and finishing a song that’s been haunting me for days. That feeling that you’ve finally got it down. Indescribable glee.

Best book ever read?
The Passion, by Jeanette Winterson. The characters, and the way they tell the story. I also identify with the heroine, Villanelle, even though I’m not a crossdresser, yet, and my feet aren’t webbed. Ha.

Favourite film of all time?
Gone with the Wind (1939). It ends with the best line: “After all, tomorrow is another day!” I’m a sucker for always looking at the bright side of things.

Favourite holiday destination? What’s your dream trip?
I’d love to visit the Caribbean. White sands, palm trees, blue skies and seas. What’s not to like? Water makes everything ok! Having said that, I love coming back to my little island of Cyprus every summer and swimming my worries away.

What music are you listening to in the car at the moment?
Oh Wonder – a duo from South East London. Their music is soothing, and sexy, and their lyrics are clever and heartfelt.

What is always in your fridge?
Beetroot (don’t ask).

Dream house: rural retreat or urban dwelling? Where would it be, what would it be like?
Rural retreat… a farm somewhere, a cottage next to it, with a lot of open space… green is a definite desire, and horses roaming around. I’m a nature lover. It helps me connect with the stuff that’s important. Too much chatter and urban stimuli can drive me mad sometimes.

If you could pick anyone at all (alive or dead) to go out for the evening with, who would it be?
Robin Williams. I miss his laughter and his smile. His open heart. His twinkly eyes. I’d love to have a conversation with him, and get some of his wisdom in me.

If the world is ending in 24 hours what would you do?
Find the person I love, and spend that last day with them chat, dance, watch comedies, listen and play favourite songs… feed each other cherries in between kisses. Endless possibilities.

What is your greatest fear?
Losing faith in humanity.

Tell me a joke…
I’m a big Woody Allen Fan, so here’s one that comes to mind:
“Don’t knock masturbation. It’s sex with someone you love.”
