The fire service and the joint rescue coordination centre (JRCC) have signed a memorandum of cooperation with the aim of coordinating the operations of the fire stations at Larnaca and Paphos airports with those of lifeguard crews at the facilities, it was announced on Monday.

The aim is to integrate the crews into the search and rescue system to fully and effectively meet the requirements of international aviation-related organisations.

The operations of the crews will help deal with emergencies in the vicinity of the airports, the announcement by the fire service said.

Specialised equipment to be used includes hovercrafts, speedboats, floating corridors and lifeboats.
