A total of twenty complaints of sexual harassment are being currently investigated by the police, spokesman Christos Andreou said on Thursday.

He added that the number might increase in the upcoming days as police are in the process of formally registering new complaints they received over the phone in the last week.

“Out of the 20 official complaints, nine are currently under investigation and seven have already been forwarded to different district courts in Cyprus. The remaining four are being further analysed by the Legal Service and we are awaiting further instructions on how to handle them,” Andreou said.

He added that authorities are doing their best to investigate similar reports as quickly as possible.

“Due to the nature of the complaints, we are doing our best to look into them quickly. That is why more members have been recently assigned to the team tasked with dealing with cases of sexual harassment.”
