More Nicosia-based volunteers will clean-up Pedieos riverbed for the third week in a row on Sunday.

Four mattresses and a full bath set including a toilet, a sink and a bathtub were among the trash picked up by Save Your Hood volunteers in the two previous clean-ups, organiser of the initiative Modestos Paraskeva told the Cyprus Mail.

“We had about 15 volunteers divided in three groups in each clean-up and gathered about 30 large garbage bags in total,” Paraskeva said.

According to the organiser, the aim is to increase the number of people and divide them in more groups so they can cover larger areas of the riverbed each time.

“We know there is great need for clean-ups in the area, so we are trying to do our part,” the volunteer added.

Waste is divided into plastic, aluminium and glass and then recycled while larger items are picked up by Strovolos municipality, according to Paraskeva.

The group decided to focus on Pedieos after the agriculture ministry said that municipality crews removed around 15 truckloads of rubbish, estimated to weigh around 150 tonnes.

Individuals who are interested in participating in this Sunday’s clean up must send an SMS to 8998 using the number 6 for physical exercise and gather at 10.30am at the parking of Strovolos municipality in Nicosia.

Clean-ups usually last about two hours the Save Your Hood representative said.
