Three men were remanded in custody for eight days on suspicion of murder, police said Wednesday, after the badly decomposed body of an unidentified woman was found in a field near the village of Athienou the previous day.

A post-mortem was expected to shed light to the circumstances and cause of death of the woman, whom police have been unable to identify so far.

Spokesman Chrtistos Andreou said investigators had some information regarding her identity but there was no confirmation.

From the investigation so far, it did not appear she had been reported missing, Andreou said.

The badly decomposed body was found in a field near the buffer zone in Athienou.

It had been laid in a shallow grave and was brought to the open after the owner of the plot ploughed the field on Sunday. Because of the darkness however, the farmer did not realise it was a human body.

Investigators determined the woman had been killed elsewhere a long time ago and brought to the field recently and buried, wrapped in plastic bin bags.

Crime scene officers investigated a scene in Aglandjia, Nicosia, where the perpetrator or perpetrators are believed to have kept the body hidden in a septic tank of an empty building before being moved to Athienou.
