A 38-year-old man under police detention escaped from the Eden rehabilitation centre where he was being treated for Covid, police said on Friday.

The suspect, initially arrested for burglary cases according to media reports, now faces additional charges of escape from legal arrest, breaking coronavirus protocols and negligence for the spread of life-threatening diseases.

Police transferred the man to a specially designed area of Eden where prisoners and detained people are held after he tested positive for the virus.

Footage from CCTV cameras revealed the man escaped on Wednesday, but his absence was only realised on Thursday.

Officers were guarding the suspect.

Eden facility in Tersefanou has been designated to treat coronavirus patients.

Police called on anyone who might have information to help locate the suspect to contact Larnaca CID on 24 804060, the citizen’s line on 1460, or their nearest police station.
