rain

Police on Saturday issued an alert due to heavy rains along the Nicosia-Limassol motorway.

In a social media announcement, the force warned drivers to be careful, drive at low speed, have their vehicle lights on and to maintain a safe trailing distance.

Earlier in the day, two separate car collisions on the Limassol to Nicosia motorway resulted to the closure of one lane near Zygi, which reopened a few hours later.

No serious injuries were reported from the accidents.

Police cited heavy hail in the area, leading to slippery roads.

On Saturday, temperatures dropped about 6C to 10C lower than the average for the season, with isolated showers and snow in the higher mountains.

Specifically, temperatures varied to 14C to 17C inland and 15C to 18C in the coastal areas.

As of 9am, snow had reached 6cm in Troodos according to Kitasweather.

Due to heavy snowfall. the roads leading to Troodos from Platres, Karvouna and Prodromos were only open for four-wheel drive cars according to the police.

Better weather conditions are expected on Sunday with temperatures forecasted to rise slightly but remain below the average for the season.

Unstable weather will persist until Monday with the possibility of rain in the afternoon, Kitasweather said.
