Defence Minister to attend Council on future of EU defence policy in Brussels

Defence Minister Charalambos Petrides is heading to Brussels to take part in Thursday’s session of the Foreign Affairs Council (Defence), where EU Defence Ministers will discuss current issues and the future of the EU Common Defence and Security Policy. The Minister will also attend a working lunch with the Secretary General of NATO.

A meeting of the governing body of the European Defence Agency (EDA) will take place before the start of the work of the Council, during which Ministers will be invited to exchange views on the steps taken and the roadmap to be followed, to implement the recommendations of the Coordinated Annual Review on Defence (CARD), a Defence Ministry press release said.

During the first working session of the Council, the Ministers will discuss the ongoing process for the definition of the strategic compass for the EU Security and Defence. It is added that during the discussion, the Ministers of Defence will consider proposals for improving EU crisis management capabilities in order to address the current security challenges in the region and within the Union.

The Defence Ministers will attend a working lunch with NATO’s Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, during which they will discuss the upgrading of cooperation between the EU and NATO on issues and actions of common interest.

The meeting will conclude with the second working session, during which the overall work of the European Union Satellite Centre will be presented and its further development and strengthening will be examined, for the benefit of EU foreign policy and defence.

Defence Ministers are also expected to ratify the participation of the United States, Canada and Norway in the Military Mobility of PESCO program and will adopt EU Conclusions on Security and Defence.
