Touring Nicosia from west to east and under the moonlight

tourweb

In large cities, it is common to refer to geographical locations as a point of direction, like London’s Southbank for example. In Cyprus’ small cities, it is a rare and one of the few such references are Nicosia’s north and south sides, which come with their own implications. An upcoming walking tour explores the city from a different perspective – from west to east.

“It is common for our divided city to be referred to by the geographical designation of north and south,” comments tour guide and archaeologist Antigone Michael which is why July 2’s tour focuses on the other two directions. A collaboration between cultural centre Phaneromenis70 and Antigone, next Friday’s afternoon tour is one of many city tours they have planned.

“Get ready to learn about Nicosia through different narratives,” they say. “Together we will talk, learn and exchange ideas, and most importantly, we will meet! Our tours will also include people of culture who will engage in open discussions with the public.”

The tour will be in English and will depart from Phaneromenis70 at 6pm, ending at Famagusta Gate two hours later. 25 participants will be able to join the walking tour as the organisers try to remain within covid measures. Register for the walk by filling out the form found on the Facebook event (From the West to the East).

Before that, another walk will take place in Nicosia, this one under the light of the first full moon after the summer solstice. Marios Epaminondas and Nicosia Walks are organising a journey along Nicosia’s old town on June 24 to discover all that has changed during the past year, in between lockdowns and restrictions.

“It’s time to meet again in person and catch up,” say the organisers. “Managing the pandemic was the main thing during the last months, but in the meanwhile, some important changes have happened in Nicosia. Let’s have a look at some of them and talk about some other ‘in the meanwhiles’ of Nicosia. Bring your ID and rapid test paper to cross the checkpoints.” Participants will meet at Nicosia’s old municipal market at 7.30pm this Thursday to explore the city’s new and old finds under the Strawberry Moon as this week’s moon is called.
