Part of Famagusta Avenue in Larnaca was renamed Demetris Christofias Avenue on Wednesday in honour of the former president who died two years ago.

Akel leader Andros Kyprianou said at the ceremony that Christofias “has now gone down in history as a political figure with an international reach”.

Kyprianou said Christofias, as both Akel leader and president of the Republic, left behind an exemplary and political legacy.

He said Christofias was an honest person with integrity, who always stood by workers and the simple people.

“His tenure in the presidency of the Republic, no matter the criticism against it, was a period during which the Cypriot people heard the truth,” he said.

Larnaca mayor Andreas Vyras said the road renaming was a very small acknowledgment of a historic leader.

“He was charismatic, a keen democrat, genuine, honest and sincere,” Vyras said.
