Understanding how an artist works

Talking about artistic practices is a look into an artist’s mind, creativity and thought process. An event by Dancehouse Lefkosia on Tuesday sees artist Lara Salmon present her practice and current work in Cyprus.

Lara is a body-based performance artist and writer from Los Angeles, California. She will be in Cyprus to perform at the Larnaca Biennale this October, and as an artist-scholar in residence at the Cypriot American Archaeological Research Institute and Kammari Residency. Diving into her creative process and work, Lara will be at Dancehouse Lefkosia on September 28 for the event starting at 8.30pm.

As an artist, Lara often works internationally, composing location-specific performances in places of personal context. Her practice explores the endurance of a body once pervaded by chronic pain. She has had eight solo and taken part in over 30 group exhibitions in the US, Europe, the Middle East and Cuba. In addition to her solo practice, Lara is part of the duo-collaborative Research for the Bermuda Triangle with Regina Mamou.

Lara’s presentation isn’t the only artistic event on Dancehouse Lefkosia’s agenda for Tuesday. In the morning, between 9am and 10.30am, Machi Dimitriadou Lindahl will lead an improvisation class on the release technique. The class will focus on physical awareness, expression, creativity and communication, based on the Taoist Principals and the Release technique. Taking into consideration the pull of gravity and the coordination of movement with breath, this guided improvisation class aims to bring participants in contact with their body, creativity, space, and especially with others.
