A 55-year-old Paphos resident was arrested for perjury and failure to obey a ‘stop list’ order after attempting to illegally fly out of the country, Paphos police said on Thursday.
According to Paphos police deputy chief Michalis Ioannou, the man was arrested at Paphos airport on Wednesday afternoon while attempting to fly to Edinburgh.
At passport control, it was determined he was not allowed to fly, as he had been placed on the government’s stop list.
An arrest warrant had been issued against the suspect after he failed to appear before Paphos district court after receiving a summons.
After his arrest, it was also determined that he was attempting to use a passport he had reported as lost in a sworn statement, reportedly so he wouldn’t have to hand it over to police.
His case is expected to be submitted to Paphos district court later on Thursday.
