Christmas walks around Nicosia

final xmas poster 2 1920x1319

With many neighbourhoods in Nicosia revamped and decorated for Christmas, December is a great month to walk around the city and explore it. And so the wandering is not at random, Cultural Centre Phaneromenis 70 and the Deputy Ministry of Tourism are organising a series of guided tours around the capital.

Eight different narratives on Nicosia through eight different walks invite the public to test how much they really know the city. And don’t worry about language barriers as there will be walks in English, Greek, Russian and French!

The tours are part of Phaneromenis 70’s ongoing cultural and anthropological programme titled Urban Details and are coordinated and supervised by archaeologist and tour guide Antigone Michael. Every tour will reveal another hidden layer of Nicosia, and encourage participants to look at the city from a new point of view.

Each December walk will set off from the cultural centre at Phaneromeni Square and are priced at a €10 donation and free for children. The first comes up on Sunday at 11am and it will be held in English with animator Marios Epaminondas talking about the secrets of barricades.

December 21’s tour, a 5pm, will look at a biography of Asia Minor-Nicosia, led by Maria Georgiou. Then on December 22, Iphigenia Gavriel will take participants on a 4pm tour called Exploring the Geology of Nicosia. The following walk welcomes children and adults as it focuses on the cats in the city. Eliza Kozakou will take guests on an afternoon tour around the city on December 23, discussing its many felines.

The tour that will come up next will be the most multilingual one of the series, held in French, English and Greek. Antri Roussou and Antigone Micheal prepare a special tour for children on December 27 titled The History of Medieval Nicosia.

Christodoulos Pavlides will lead a walk in Russian the following day exploring Nicosia while Marios Antoniou will take children on a walk that will reveal Nicosia through the centuries on December 29 at 5pm. Wrapping up the series is a special event on December 30 is a winter holidays party tour/pop up bar with Antigone Michael at 6pm. Talk about Christmas fun in the city!
