A 44-year-old man was arrested in connection with a hit-and-run on Sunday evening that resulted to the death of a 60-year-old pedestrian, police said on Monday.

Androula Papachristoforou was trying to cross Priamou street in Paphos at around 9.15pm when under conditions that are being investigated she was hit by a car whose driver fled the scene.

Police on Monday afternoon said they arrested a 44-year-old man in connection with the case. He is being investigated for manslaughter, causing death by negligence and abandoning the scene of the accident.

Earlier in the day, police said they were looking for the driver of the car that hit the woman.

Papachristoforou was rushed by ambulance to Paphos general hospital where about two hours later, she succumbed to her wounds.

According to the Cyprus News Agency, CCTV footage in the area reportedly showed a male driver getting out of the car. When he saw the injured woman he grabbed his head with his hands, but then climbed back into his car, reversed and drove away.

Police had called for help from the public to help locate the driver.

This was the second fatal traffic accident in the district over the last 24 hours. Earlier on Sunday, at around 7.30am, Briton Christopher Simmons, 26, died on Ayios Georgios Peyias avenue.
