‘Please breathe in …’ an artist’s take on chaos

One more art exhibition is added to Nicosia’s cultural agenda just before the month ends. Anthi Pafiou’s solo drawing exhibition, Please Breathe in before Freefalling, opens at Marginalia Gallery this Wednesday where it will remain open until April 20.

The exhibition, the result of artistic research that is divided into two units, presents new works from the last two years and marks the return of the artist creations of dynamic images and abstract symbolism. The works in the exhibition examine different ever-changing realities combined with intense, dynamic psychological states. The works find the fine line between chaos and thus raise questions about how the conscious way of painting offers subconscious possibilities for creating meaning.

“Anthi’s act of drawing,” say the exhibition organisers, “feels like a dialogue with herself. When she touches the material, it is not always clear what the outcome will be, nor what she will draw, but she knows that what will be born on the canvas will be a reflection of her inner thoughts, yet something that transcends her own understanding.

“Her work asks us to take a breath, taking it all in,” they add, “listen closely to what her brushstrokes convey, discovering new meanings and hypothesising on what is presented to us might actually be.”
