Two arrests related to suspected thefts in Paphos

Paphos police HQ

Two people, men aged 30 and 23, were arrested by Paphos police in the early hours of Saturday on suspicion of attempted theft and illegal possession of property.

The 30-year-old was arrested shortly after 4am after the owner of a car spotted a man trying to break into his parked vehicle and called police.

Police said when they apprehended the suspect they found in his possession a set of car keys for which he could not give a satisfactory explanation.

He was arrested for trying to break into the car and detained until police established whether the keys they subsequently found on him were related to a previous car theft.

Earlier, shortly after midnight, police on patrol in Kato Paphos, spotted a 23-year-old man riding a bicycle, while at the same time holding on to a second one.

After being stopped and questioned, police said they found on him a kitchen knife with a 14cm blade, a lantern, suspected burglary tools, and a pocketknife.

They said he also did not have a satisfactory explanation as to why he was riding with a second bicycle in tow, or where either bike had come from. Police are investigating to see if they were stolen.

Meanwhile the suspect has been remanded for three days by the Paphos court.
