Children of Nicosia prison inmates participated for the first time this year in the Easter activities at the prisons in a family event held on Tuesday.

In the presence of prison director Anna Aristotelous, inmates gathered at the sports fields of the prisons to celebrate Easter Tuesday with traditional games.

The activities included bouncy castles, potato sack races and a tug of war.

There was also a clown on stilts to entertain the children, who participated in the activities for the first time.

“It was shocking for all of us today,” Aristotelous told the Cyprus Mail. She mentioned the case of a father who was jailed when his child was just an infant and today saw his child running to him and calling out ‘daddy’.

Various events with the inmates’ children take place a few times per year, Aristotelous said, even during the coronavirus pandemic.

On Friday, there was a decoration and procession of the Epitaph when the prisoners had the opportunity to receive Holy Communion.
