delo

The Larnaca Cinema Society has been entertaining cinephiles with a series of free film screenings since the start of the year. Bringing independent world cinema to Larnaca’s big screen, at Pattichion Municipal Theatre, the film series is finally reaching its end. Three more free screenings remain for May.

Coming up next is the award-winning comedy Another Round which will screen on May 2. A Danish, Swedish and Dutch production, the film follows four high school teachers who consume alcohol on a daily basis, curious to see how it affects their social and professional lives. Hilarious and clever, the film won an Oscar in 2021 for Best International Feature Film and a BAFTA for Best Film Not in the English Language.

On May 16, the Russian film Delo, also known as House Arrest, will take the big screen. Directed by Aleksey German Jr, the film follows a Russian professor who takes to social media to criticize his city’s administration but soon finds himself accused of embezzlement and is placed under house arrest. In June 2021, the film was selected to compete in the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival and received two awards at international film festivals.

The final film of the series is the Greek film Daniel’ 16 which is a touching story about children who are forced to take their future into their hands. In the film, Daniel, a German teenager, is sent to Greece, to a juvenile offender community, to serve his sentence. There, in an abandoned village in the Evros river area, near the border with Turkey, he experiences unprecedented emotions and has to solve a difficult dilemma. His final decision will surprise everyone. This film too, won two awards and was nominated for another three in the categories of Best Feature Film and Best Director.
