Guided tours, workshops and presentations at Leventis museum

creative workshop

Keeping up the momentum of World Museum Day in May, the Leventis Municipal Museum is welcoming the summer with a packed agenda. Guided tours of its new exhibition, creative workshops for children and book presentations are in the museum’s calendar for this month, offering something for everyone.

Coming up on June 15 is a guided tour of the temporary exhibition Chora – Ioannis Kissonerghis. Led by the assistant curator of the exhibition Chrysostomos Sakalis, the tour will unveil Nicosia through the artistic gaze of the painter Ioannis Kissonerghis. Held in Greek, the tour will begin at 6.30pm, lasting just under one hour. Another will be held on June 30 guided by the exhibition’s curator Maria Patsalosavvi.

Then on June 18 an event for young adventurers as part of European Archaeology Days 2022. A creative morning workshop with an ancient adventure will transform the museum’s young visitors into archaeologists in action. The workshop for children aged 7 to 12 will them on an exploration to discover what is hiding underneath the museum’s glass door, what ‘ancient’ really means, how artefacts survive and how one becomes an archaeologist.

The children will have the opportunity to chat with an archaeologist and to listen to her stories of excavations, explorations and ‘ancient adventures’. They will also take a close look at some objects related to ancient Nicosia and discover the archaeologist hidden within.

Returning to the spirit of the exhibition currently on at the museum, the Association of the Friends of the Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia and the AG Leventis Gallery are organising a presentation on June 23 of the renowned publication Chora, the old Nicosia written by the late Agni M Michaelides.

Michaelides was a writer and also a founding member of the association and has donated many of her valuable personal objects to the museum, which are currently ranked among the top 100 items in its collections. At the presentation on June 23, in Greek, audiences will have the chance to meet yesterday’s Nicosia through the distinctive and descriptive language of the writer.
