Father charged with attempted murder over shooting of son

A 69-year-old man was on Thursday charged with the attempted premeditated murder of his son in the village of Pyrga in the Larnaca district in May, the Cyprus News Agency reported.

The defendant, who appeared before Larnaca criminal court, was also charged with causing grievous bodily harm.

He will answer to the charges on July 21. The court also ordered that he remain in police custody.

The man is accused of shooting his son with a shotgun after a family argument at their home on May 26. The victim was injured in the shoulder and taken by ambulance to Nicosia General Hospital where he underwent surgery.

The defendant was taken to Larnaca General Hospital with head injuries sustained when another son attempted to disarm him.

He had left the scene and gone to Kophinou police station where he turned himself in after informing officers what had happened.

He was arrested and remanded in custody. Police filed the case before Larnaca district court on June 3 which referred the defendant to stand trial before the criminal court
