Photographing the stars

Stargazing is fun but venturing out into the dark of the night to photograph them is possibly more thrilling. This is exactly what the House of Science in collaboration with the 6×6 Centre for Photography has planned for July as they organise an astrophotography workshop focusing on the milky way. And organisers aim for participants to have their own printed photos by the end of the series.

The workshop is comprised of three sessions spanning 10 hours. The first on July 29 will focus on the theory and background aspects of the challenge. Photography basics, focusing in the dark, composition, lighting, exposure and software will make up this session. Lasting three hours, it will take place at the House of Science in Limassol.

Day two on Saturday 30 will take place between 8pm and midnight as this is the photoshoot evening. For this session, participants will go to a dark sky location. Photo shooting, equipment demonstration and observation of different celestial objects through the telescopes will happen as participants take their photos.

The final aspect of the workshop is digital editing which will take place on August 1 at the House of Science. Using Photoshop and Lightroom, participants will get a glimpse of the post-processing procedure and be introduced to advanced techniques such as image stacking to wrap up three days of starry photography knowledge.
