Mathikoloni blaze under control, firefighters on alert (Update)

A fire that broke out in the village of Mathikoloni in the Limassol district was brought under control shortly before 8pm on Wednesday.

Firefighters were mobilised just before 6pm to deal with a fire that broke out in the village of Mathikoloni in the Limassol district.

In a twitter post, Fire Department spokesman Andreas Kettis said the fire broke out at 5.40pm and burned a total area of about 4 hectares of dry grass, wild vegetation and trees (carob and olive trees).

Kettis said the Icarus 2 plan was activated to deal with the fire, with firefighting ground and air crews deployed from the Fire Department and the Forestry Department to extinguish the fire.

“The firefighting forces continue with the demarcation of the fire and extinguishing the last outbreaks but also dealing with any resurgences. Forces will remain on alert in the area throughout the night,” he added.

The causes of the fire will be investigated in cooperation with the police.
