feature election main a new party has been formed specifically for hunters

With the hunting season kicking off on Sunday, the forestry department on Thursday called on hunters to be especially careful when in forest areas.

The department called for the complete avoidance of actions and activities likely to cause a fire and once again reminded that lighting a fire without a permit within a two kilometres radius from the edges of state forests constitutes an offence punishable by up to ten years in prison and/or a fine of up to €50,000.

Lighting a fire in the countryside is also an offence punishable by up to five years in prison and/or a fine of up to €20,000.

Fires are only allowed in areas specially designated for grilling at picnic sites.

The department emphasised that the risk of explosion and spread of a forest fire is extremely high requiring special attention.

Anyone who sees smoke or fire is urged to call 1407 or 112.
