The Cypriot-flagged bulk carrier ‘Maritsa’ has collided with a Liberian carrier anchored in the Belgian coastal town of Ostend, reports said on Friday.

No injuries were reported according to the Brussels Times with Belga.

The collision happened around 2.45pm on Thursday in the Wandelaar anchorage area of Ostend when Maritsa was getting underway and had heaved anchor to continue its journey to Ghent in Belgium after having arrived in Ostend from Constanta in Romania.

The Liberian vessel ‘Joy’ was at anchor when it was struck at low speed by the Maritsa, the report said, citing the maritime and coastal services agency.

No crew members were injured in the collision, but both ships’ sheet metal and paint were damaged, and a lifeboat was also reportedly destroyed.

Maritime police are investigating the circumstances that caused the collision.
