Larnaca district court on Tuesday ordered the 15-day suspension of a 33-year-old motorist’s licence after he was caught driving almost double the speed limit the previous day.

According to Larnaca police spokesman Charis Hadjiyiasemi, the man was stopped by traffic police on Monday morning.

He had been driving at 196km/h on the Larnaca-Kofinou highway, where the speed limit is 100 km/h.

He was arrested on the spot and led to a police station, where he was charged in writing and released.

On Tuesday he appeared before Larnaca district court, which imposed a €1,200 fine to be paid immediately, in addition to ordering the suspension of his licence for 15 days, and the imposition of eight penalty points.
