Continuing to present local and international cultural productions, Kypria International Festival will until mid-October take artists and art lovers around the island. Coming up next are performances from Cyprus, Germany and The Netherlands, with productions in all four major cities.

Arriving next is a local production which presents Anton Chekhov’s famous play The Cherry Orchard. Pocket Theatre, under the direction of Marios Theoharous, will stage the final play of the great Russian writer about the unmerciful power of change and the confusion of future uncertainty, the fears but also the hopes for all new things amid huge historical changes. On September 20, 21, 26 and 28 the theatre NGO will take the play to Limassol, Nicosia, Paphos and Larnaca.

The play follows Lyubov Andreievna, a tragic heroine in a comic drama, who returns to the family home as the authentic way of life of the erstwhile wealthy family is slowly disappearing, and with it, their beloved cherry orchard. Amid tremendous social changes, and on the verge of financial collapse, a decision must be made whether to sell their land to make way for holiday cottages or remain in blissful denial of the unstoppable march of progress.

The next performance on September 23 and 24 is a co-production between Cyprus and Germany featuring the Natasa Hadjiandreou Ensemble. Across two performances, the House of One evenings highlight the percussion instruments as solo instruments in the contemporary literature of the classical music repertoire, presenting them through a diverse programme with various combinations of instruments and ensembles. Four German and Cypriot artists interpret works by Christos Hatzis, Iannis Xenakis, Minoru Miki and Andis Skordis that have as their central idea the concept of spirituality, as observed through the process of ritual as a social phenomenon, by performing African ritual rhythms, fertility rituals and rituals related to nature and environmental phenomena.

Shortly after those performances, comes a production from The Netherlands called An Evening with NDT 2. NDT 2 is a fully engaged and creative dance company that also focuses on development and research. The troupe explores many areas of movement research, dance development and collaboration for professional artists, dance students and others within the dance community. Each season, NDT 2 creates two programmes that include extensive tours in the Netherlands and Europe. For their participation in Kypria, they are presenting three pieces – The Big Crying, Bedtime Story and Cluster performed in Nicosia on September 24 and 25.
