Anastasiades to meet Guterres on September 23

President Nicos Anastasiades is to meet UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on September 23 on the sidelines of the 77th UN general assembly in New York, the presidential palace announced on Saturday.

On that day, the president will also address the UN general assembly at 4pm Cyprus time.

Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides will also be attending.

According to an official announcement, during their stay in New York they will meet with foreign leaders and officials.

The president’s agenda will focus on the Cyprus problem and overcoming the current impasse, Turkey’s provocative actions in the Eastern Mediterranean and the lack of will from the Turkish Cypriot side to engage in dialogue, as well as issues such as climate change, the war in Ukraine and other regional developments.

Additionally, the president will hold a lunch for the permanent representatives of the ‘Big Five’ members of the UN security council – China, the US, UK, France and Russia – and will also meet with diaspora organisations.

Before New York, on Monday September 19 the President will be in Westminster Abbey, London attending Queen Elizabeth’s II funeral along with other foreign leaders and heads of state.

First Lady Andri Anastasiades will be accompanying the president.

Anastasiades will travel from London to New York on Tuesday, September 20.
