Sessions: A programme of queer happenings

A three-month public programme of queer events from live music, poetry, theatre and dance performances to talks, workshops, parties and screenings is arriving this autumn. Over the course of October to December, the programme titled Sessions presents a series of happenings that celebrate the multiplicity of interpretation and engagement, and widen the relationship between the personal and the collective.

A support structure is installed by Dimitris Chimonas and Lex Gregoriou at the basement of 6 Sapfous in Nicosia Old Town (ex DriveDrive), designed to elaborate on modes of exchange, participation, and witnessing. The stage is framed in response to a collaborative project by artist Panayiotis Michael to make use of and activate a 15m2 surface.

The lounge on the ground floor consists of Soft Sculptures crafted by Eva and Belinda Papavasiliou (courtesy of Morir Soñando), enhanced by the scents of Floricienta Iuvenalis. A bar table providing fitting beverages, cocktails by Bar Souvenir and hand-cooked food by Yiorgos Rossides accompany each session.

Simultaneous to the happenings, Pashies LTD will be devising the prelude, interlude, and encore online, while an in-situ gesture by Orestis Lazouras is to be uncovered. Sessions sets out to establish an open and safe space to experiment, practice and share.

The opening session will be a three-day event from October 14 to 16 where three DJs will warm up the space for one hour and fifteen minutes each day starting at 8.30pm. On Friday, Raw Silver will be presented which is the synaesthetic description of Nikos Stephou’s sound performance. With it he has accomplished various releases on record label compilations around the world, including his homeland record label HonestElectronics, which he co-created.

On Saturday, Sessions will welcome Loizos Olympios, a Limassol-based artist whose current practice explores Queerness-Space-Text-Ecology through collage, photography, asemic writing, bookmaking, archiving and collection building. Finally, on Sunday DJ Harama will take the floor. Also known as elektroniki, DJ Harama is a project that came to light with the intention of playing sounds fitting to those fluid transitional hours. Depending on the time slot given, harama takes listeners through a collage of sounds creating a soundscape of elevating, deep and experimental environments.
