Head of the Paphos fishing association, Leonidas Leonidou, on Tuesday took the opportunity of the celebration of St Nicolas, patron saint of sailors, to highlight the grievances of fishermen at Kato Paphos.
Professional fishermen are in despair, Leonidou said, due to the stalling of necessary and important upgrades to port.
In statements to the Cyprus News Agency, Leonidou said that the fishermen are in dire need of a new fishing shelter and mooring docks. The port is subject to strong winds in the winter and under current conditions they suffer damages to their boats. He also stated that an upgraded dry dock is required so fishermen can take their boats ashore for repairs.
Leonidou continued that additionally access to parking is an issue, with fishermen unable to secure spots.
The Paphos fishing association will send new letters to officials to press the matter, Leonidou said.
